Batting

Basic Batting Techniques

This section covers the basics of batting, including how to grip the bat and stand at the wicket.  You will also learn how to prepare to play a shot, how to defend your wicket and play a front drive as well as tips on running between the wickets and avoiding run outs.

Successful batting is all about timing and technique.  Standing correctly helps you get into the right position to select and play the most appropriate shot.  Batting is easy to learn and difficult to master – practise as much as you can to play straight shots that send the ball in the direction you intend.  This will help you defend your wicket and exploit gaps in the field and score more runs in matches.

Advanced Batting Techniques

This covers a wider a range of shots, you will also learn how to work the ball into the gaps in order to increase your scoring.  Some of these shots take a lot of practice to get right, try to think about the shots you play in a match and assess which is your strongest and weakest shot.  For example do you play better leg side or side shots, are you stronger off the back foot or the front foot?  Most junior players are strongest playing either front foot drives or pull shots on the leg side.  Coaches will help you work on your weaknessess to improve your all round ability with the bat.

But before you race out to the nets to try your hand at square cuts and leg glances – you need to get the basics right first.
