Backlift and Step
Basic Batting Drill 2 – Backlift and Step
The backlift is a very important part of the shot.
- If you lift up the bat too late you may miss the ball.
- If you lift it too early you will hit the ball on the upstroke or follow through and may give a catch.
- Keep your head still as you lift the bat and step either back or forwards.
- Grip the bat firmly as you prepare to play the shot.
- You should lift the bat and step together.
- Try turning the bat slightly as you lift it so that the blade of the bat faces away from you – this can help you to bring the bat through straight as you play the ball and avoid edging the ball.
- Don’t over stretch or stride too far.
- Stay balanced and watch the ball.
- Transfer your weight to your front or back leg as appropriate to play the shot.
