Front Foot Defence
Basic Batting Drill 3 – The Front Foot Defence
A straight delivery on a good length has to be played with care. The forward defensive stroke is used to block the ball rather than to score runs. Every batsman needs a solid defence to build big scores.
- This is a good shot to ‘settle in’ when you first go out to bat.
- It is also a good shot to practise in the nets.
Try and follow the sequence below. The diagrams show you how to play the shot correctly. Practise at home (without a ball) in front of a mirror.
- This is the starting position for the shot as the ball approaches.
- Notice that the batsman is on his toes, head still and weight evenly balanced with a high back lift.
