Square Cut
Advanced Batting Drill 3 – The Square Cut
If bowlers give most batsmen a short and wide delivery outside off stump, chances are they’ll be hit for four runs, square of the wicket. A well executed square cut is a glorious shot to play and see played.
The square cut allows batsmen to free their arms and hit the ball with a cross bat, enabling them to get plenty of power on the shot.
But be careful, although a square cut can score you plenty of runs, it can also lead to your downfall if you get too confident.
Try and follow the sequence and diagrams below which show you how to play the shot correctly.
- Shift your weight to your back foot and move it across and back towards off stump as the bat is taken back above the right shoulder.
- Getting the back foot in the right position is very important. Keep your head level and watch the ball.
