Fielding Drill 2 – Preventing Overthrows

Stopping overthrows relies on a technique called ‘backing up’ which requires another fielder to stand behind the fielder at the stumps, in line with the incoming throw. Just in case the throw is wide or high or the fielder at the stumps makes a mistake and fails to take the ball.

Remember – always back up the incoming throw

The following diagram shows how this works in practice

Take personal responsilibilty for backing up - don't rely on someone else

  • A runs in to field the ball and throw to fielder B
    behind the stumps.
  • C is the next closest fielder to the stumps and
    runs across from his fielding position.
  • C backs up in line with the fielder B
    and the incoming thrower A
