Keeping Wicket

Fielding Drill 6 – Taking The Ball Behind The Stumps

Good wicket keeping requires concentration, agility and practice

  • This is a skill that becomes easier as you get used to the actions of the bowlers in your team.
  • Keeping is about confidence and the more time you practise catching the ball, the easier it will become.
  • But first you need to get your basics right.

Step 1
Adopt the correct stance.  Bend your knees, crouch down and take position slightly outside the line of the off stump; so that you have a clear view past the stumps.  Put your weight on the front of your feet, keep your head still and your hands, close together,: between your feet with fingers pointing down.

Step 2
Having adopted the correct stance, your body should rise as you judge the bounce of the ball. Move your feet and body to get into line with the ball.

Step 3
If the ball is below chest height then take the ball with fingers pointing down. If the ball is higher, then twist your head and body and take the ball with hands horizontal.
